A major auto insurance company is making plans to place an initiative on the California ballot in 2010 that would require those who have had a lapse in coverage to pay hundreds more once they resume that coverage. This is according to the nonprofit organization, Campaign for Consumer Rights, a campaign affiliate of Consumer Watchdog, which released a press release on Wednesday explaining that initiative being set forth by auto insurance giant Mercury Insurance.
What’s This Initiative About?
The nonprofit’s press release said that Mercury Insurance was pushing forward an initiative that would surcharge drivers – including soldiers and seniors – who had a lapse in car insurance coverage during the past five years.

If you’re at all tempted to cut corners on paying for your auto insurance, first take into consideration the man who was jailed recently for allegedly presenting a false auto insurance card. The man, from Orleans County in the metro Rochester, NY area was charged on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009 with second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.
The Crime
As recently reported in The Daily News, Nicholas Rich was arraigned on Monday morning for allegedly presenting a false auto insurance card to a police officer. He was originally stopped at a traffic stop for driving on expired registration.

Recently, we reported about a study that showed customer satisfaction with auto insurance companies was at a 5-year high (See story: Customers Report 5-Year High in Satisfaction); however, a new report shows that customers are also happy with the auto insurance claims process.
The report, the 2009 Auto Claims Satisfaction Study, was releasedby J.D. Power and Associates onThursday.
Facts from the Study
The study set out to find discover overall satisfaction among auto insurance claimants. It discovered that on a 1000-point scale, the average satisfaction rating is 842 for 2009, which is 24 points higher than 2008.

A New Jersey hospital is offering a set of defensive driving courses to area residents to help curb the rising costs of auto insurance rates. Along with AARP and the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center is providing a two-day event to help lower rates for drivers.
About the Event
On Nov. 17 and 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the hospital will be hosting the defensive driving courses. Those who participate in both sessions will qualify for a two-point reduction on their driving record, as well as receive a discount on their auto insurance for three years.
